Barnard 228 ist Teil der Lupus-Molekülwolke. Im Sternbild Lupus, dem Wolf, gelegen, verdient B228 seinen Spitznamen "Dunkler Wolf-Nebel". Ein Teil der Milchstraße verläuft durch Lupus, was diesem Bild eine sehr hohe Sternendichte verleiht.
